Does Scalp Micropigmentation look real?
Scalp Micropigmentation, also known as a hair tattoo, is a form of permanent makeup for hair loss. The treatment works by implanting tiny impressions of pigment into the upper dermal layer of the scalp to create the illusion of hair follicles. Thousands and thousands of impressions are made during the course of an SMP treatment, which on average is 3-4 sessions. Once complete, SMP covers exposed areas of scalp to give the appearance of full hair density. Scalp Micropigmentation looks 100% real and natural when administered by a trained technician.
SMP results after 1-5 years
On average, scalp micropigmentation lasts between 1 to 5 years before requiring a top-up. As SMP does not go as deep into the skin as a traditional tattoo, the results will fade over time. The pigment will slowly lighten over the years (NOT completely disappear OR discolour). This is due to our immune systems gradually breaking down the pigment as our bodies will respond to the pigment as a foreign object. Other factors which could cause the pigment to lighten include sun exposure, skin type and lifestyle.
How to care for your Scalp Micropigmentation
- Always protect your SMP when in direct sunlight with either a head covering such as a hat or head scarf, or wear SPF 30-50.
- Keep the treated area of scalp well hydrated with either hair conditioner and hair masks for long hair, or a skin moisturiser for shaved hair. For a more intense moisture boost, consider a PRP treatment or micro-needling.
- A healthy lifestyle including eating well and avoiding smoking will improve the skins texture and ability to heal, and therefore improve the longevity of a scalp micropigmentation treatment.
